Branford Festival
Join us at the Land Trust booth to help set up (7:15 AM), break down (3:30 PM), or for an hour or two during the day to tell friends and neighbors about how you're helping the Land Trust protect Branford's open space for future generations.

Nature Explorer Program: Sundials
11:30 a.m. Sundials constructed to celebrate the Solstice, when the sun's at its highest for the year. At Hammer Field. Meet at the Community Center basketball courts on your way to or from the Branford Festival. "Cloudy" date June 21. Story And A Hike Series: Tidal Explorers
Long Wharf Nature Preserve

Join Justin Pegnataro and the New Haven Land Trust on a family adventure! Explore the shore of the LWNP, listen to a story about a mischievous crab and explore the beach for ocean treasures. Don't forget to bring a bucket to hold your treasures. SUNDAY, 2:00-4:00 p.m. Sponsored by the New Haven Land Trust and Two Coyotes Wilderness School. $10 per person or $20 per family. Land Tract Stewards Lecture-Discussion: "Understory Stand Dynamics"
7:30 p.m. at the Blackstone Memorial Library

Thomas Worthley, Stewardship Program Forester, University of Connecticut. Mr. Worthley will give us a better understanding of how forests interact by describing the area of growth in the shade of an emergent forest canopy, illustrating the competition between tree seedlings and saplings of canopy trees with the shrubs and herbs of the understory.

Nature Explorer Program: Scavenger Hunt
2 p.m. Scavenger Hunt using COMPASSES at Foote Park. With Larry Wheeler & Bob Weltzien. Learn to use a compass and make your way through the course. Anyone with a compass is encouraged to bring it to supplement our supply. Rain date July 12. Work Party – Goss
We will be clearing trails and removing invasive plants. Meet at 9:00 a.m. at the Goss trailhead on the Tilcon access road at 190 Totoket Rd. (Park in the parking lot at the Pine Orchard end of the trolley trail.) Bring loppers, small hand saws, sturdy hand clippers, and work gloves. All work parties begin at 9:00 a.m.. Branford Land Trust Environmental Day Camp For Kids!

The Branford Land Trust is pleased to announce the 14th annual hands-on Environmental Day Camp. Kids ages 5-9 will enjoy hands-on activities including tidepools with Schooner; woodland exploration; Wind Over Wings, an educational program with live birds; Denison Pequotsepos Nature Center with live amphibians and reptiles of New England; nature crafts; and a puppet show with Michael Wolski (entire show is done with recycled materials!). The day will run from approximately 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. A full day’s agenda, map, and list of what to bring will be mailed upon receipt of your registration and payment of $45.00 (additional children, same family $35.00) or $35 for Land Trust members. Scholarships available. Space is limited and the camp fills quickly. Registration deadline is Thursday, July 23, 2009. For further information contact Martha Rice at 488-1290. Branford Boat Parade down the Branford River. Bring your own non-motorized boat to the high school to paddle to Branford Point. Co-sponsored with the Branford River Project. Work Party - Lower Sybil Creek Preserve
We will be working on the Sybil Creek property next to Bruce & Johnson’s Marina, cutting bittersweet and other climbing plants that are strangling the trees on this important upland part of the Sybil Creek Preserve. Meet at 9:00 a.m. at the parking lot of Bruce & Johnson’s Marina at the end of Block Island Road. Bring loppers, small hand saws, sturdy hand clippers, and work gloves. Footwear that can get a little wet or muddy will let you walk along the edge of the marsh if you want. Call Lynn Perone (488-2654) for more information.
